Beautiful Mount Saint-Michel in Normandy, France

Mont Saint-Michel
Mont Saint-Michel is a rocky tidal island and a commune in Normandy, France. It is located approximately one kilometer off the country’s northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches.

Some facts about Mont St-Michel

  • Mont-Saint-Michel was a stronghold of Romano-Breton culture, but the French ransacked it in the 6th or 7th century.
  • In the 8th century, Mont Saint Michel was called Mont Tomb, due to the fact that St. Michel appeared to St. Aubert, and he told St. Aubert to build a church, but Auburt didn’t listen so St. Michel burned a hole in his head with his finger.
  • Mont-Saint-Michel was originally an abbey, but in the French Revolution, the monks fled and the abbey was closed and changed into a prison.
  • In 1067, after William of Normandy was crowned, he got a small island west of Cornwall that he modeled after Mont-Saint-Michel and called it St Michael’s mount of Penzance.
  • In the Hundred Years’ war, the English tried to destroy Mont-Saint-Michel but couldn’t because it was fortified.
